DLA Piper

Profile

DLA Piper's Litigation & Regulatory group comprises dispute resolution and regulatory lawyers in more than 40 countries in the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. Our Sports Regulation team works closely with our expansive litigation and arbitration practices to provide an integrated and efficient approach to disputes and regulatory issues for our sport, media and entertainment clients. We have a long history of successful representation in sports-related disputes ranging from disciplinary issues and inquiries, through contract disputes, competition and facility construction matters, to intellectual property litigation. Typical legal issues that the team face include bribery, corruption, fraud, inaccurate accounting, AML, market manipulation, powers of the regulators, health and safety investigations, trading standard investigations, as well as breaches of specific regulation.

Sport, media and entertainment are complex global businesses that face both tremendous opportunities and considerable threats. Our worldwide footprint enables our team to offer clients both local knowledge and global service. We provide industry advice commonly associated with smaller niche firms, but with the advantages of a global business law firm. This encompasses not only sports regulation but sports finance (where we advise the world's leading professional sports leagues, club owners, investors, lenders and other financial institutions in sports related project finance, leveraged finance, securitisations, securities offerings and government sponsored financings); the administration and commercialisation of sports events (where our global network of sports-focussed lawyers advises sports administrators, rights holders, municipal authorities, commercial bodies and others in hosting, organising and exploiting major sports events, wherever they take place); and assisting and advising national and international sports federations, across the breadth of their business legal requirements.

At DLA Piper, we understand the way modern sport works and how it integrates with media and entertainment. We know how governing bodies operate, how sporting venues are financed, how teams are run, how players compete, how media rights are exploited and, crucially, how industry regulators ensure compliance across all of these. Our team understands how to address the dangers and opportunities that arise as technology evolves and sport continues to have a major social, political and commercial impact around the world.
